Stuart Murphy's visit

Stuart at Open Window
Stuart Murphy a author of a series of math books called MathStart and a series of books which help children social, cognitive skills like making friends, building confidence, for preschool children - I See I Learn; was in Mumbai on the 5th and 10th of February 2011, talking to children and teachers about visual learning and how his books can aid teachers and parents alike to make their children successful students.

Start Murphy, was the first author to various schools; as part of the Open Window Author's program - where we invite authors to speak to children, teachers and parents and explain what they are books are all about and how they can aid learning, while making it fun.
As part of the Mumbai tour, Stuart visited 4 schools, in South Mumbai and conducted a total of 9 sessions, including the children and teachers sessions.

He explained to the teachers how math can be integrated into other subjects and connect it to their lives making it an holistic experience, rather than something which they learn only to pass their examinations. He also emphasized on the fact that math is something which is used every where and not only as part of school. While introducing the teachers to visual learning, he spoke about how "we live in a visual society and therefore we learn and children learn better visually".

The children enjoyed the story reading sessions (Jack the builder and Less than Zero); and shown how Stuart uses math, pictures and words to make learning fun and interesting. The counted along, enjoyed the pictures and answered questions... and best of all; had fun while learning math!

All in all, it were 2 exciting days of learning, hearing stories and making math a friend rather than a foe!
